Invisible Lives: Stories of Adults with Learning Disabilities 5.00

Produced by Destined

Have you ever wondered what it's like to grow up with a learning disability? Or what it's like to care for someone with a learning disability? The chances are you haven't. There are some stories that always remain untold, and lives that always remain invisible, to society.

Now, for the first time, a group of Derry-based adults with learning disabilities are publishing their life stories in book form. They tell, in their own words, of their trials and tribulations, their hopes and their dreams, their triumphs and their tragedies.

They recall the dark days of locked institutions and cruel beatings; of intolerance and abuse. But they record also an unfolding human rights agenda, which has seen major - if unfinished - progress in how people with learning disabilities can now pursue fully "visible" lives.

Every single story here has something different to tell you. Something unique to teach you. This book is a celebration of life, both the hardships and the good times. It is a celebration of survival.

The 20 in-depth interviews with the Destined members and their carers were facilitated by project manager, Dermot O'Hara, and transcribed by the members themselves before being edited by local author, Garbhan Downey.

Cover designed by the Destined group, in conjunction with Jim Collins of the Bluebell Arts Project.
